Key Applications:

1. Semiconductor Industry: The most critical application. Titanium films are used as:

   • Adhesion Layer: It sticks very well to silicon and silicon dioxide, providing a foundation for other metals like aluminum or copper.

   • Diffusion Barrier: A thin layer of titanium (or more commonly, titanium nitride – TiN) prevents copper from diffusing into the silicon and ruining the microchip.

2. Decorative Coatings: When sputtered in a nitrogen atmosphere, titanium forms Titanium Nitride (TiN), which has a bright, gold color. It’s used to coat watches, jewelry, and bathroom fixtures for a durable, attractive finish.

3. Tool Coatings: TiN coatings dramatically increase the hardness, wear resistance, and service life of cutting tools (e.g., drill bits, milling cutters) and molds.

4. Optical Coatings: Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) films are used on lenses and eyewear for their high refractive index and anti-reflective properties.
